La Maison des Sources is a traditional XIX th century house located in Ain Zhalta.
As most vernacular houses in the mountains, it was built in different stages and then abandoned .
The restoration of the house aimed first at analyzing and understanding its history before commencing the works.
The identity of the house was then revealed and restored by using traditional techniques in stone construction & lime mortar application, mixed to modern steel reinforcement where needed.
The interior design also preserved the stories & authenticity of the house, the old paint mortar finish was kept when possible and all the added wooden elements were recuperated items .
The result is a confortable modern guest house with the charm of its original XIXth century age.
This villa was conceived according to challenging program asked by the client and we wanted to keep maximum integration to the shape of the plot / ground thus the stunning view to the valley / sea made us use large openings to enjoy the view from inside. When windows opened we wanted to feel that the interior is part of the garden. Small natural stones cladding is to integrate more the villa to its natural surrounding and its landscape terraces like typically used in Lebanese mountains for agriculture.
The main challenge in this building located in a traditional high end area of Achrafieh was to rebuild the old 2 flats house in the new building and integrate the old and new architecture to keep the heritage of Beirut present in the area. Some of old tiles and steel balustrade have been reused in the new construction.
